Karen’s biographyThere was significant foreshadowing in Karen’s early childhood. At age 3, she ran around her neighbourhood chopping off the hair of all the kids and pets she could lay her hands on, and says she has pictures to prove it. A little girl named Shirley had a Mom that was particularly furious – enough so that Karen remembers even today!
Karen says she was fortunate that her parents let her have all kinds of pets from an early age. She raised baby chicks in her closet, and had several pet rabbits. She was always cutting and blow drying their hair.
She bought her first show dog in 1972 when she was 16 years old. Her parents didn’t help – if she wanted the dog, she had to pay for it. She saved all of her babysitting money, and paid $350 for Silverdale’s Salish Daphne – an American Cocker Spaniel. The dog became a Canadian Champion within the year.
Karen started breeding American cocker Spaniels in 1974. She joined the BC Cocker Spaniel Club, and was Dog Show Secretary. She started showing her own dogs, and those of others. She taught dog obedience and dog show handling. In 1975 Karen was asked by the Boxer Club of BC if she would be interested in judging the sporting group, which she did for 10 years.
As part of her early work experience, she worked in a grooming shop called “The Tail Wager”. She was trained by an English woman, who taught her the “proper” way of doing things from the ground floor up. She spent five years there.
Karen opened Happy Tails in 1987 on Vancouver’s West 4th avenue, where the shop remained until moving to its New, Bright and Beautiful home on centrally located Oak Street in the Spring of 2015. She has groomed the dogs of several celebrities, include Joan Rivers and Kirstie Alley. Many of Global TV’s on-air personalities are regular customers, and the shop is recommended by several local veterinarians.
